still there? Good. Let me introduce myself. My name is Steven Hopkins,
Steve to my friends, Im in my early, OK, mid fifties and Ive
worked for myself since I was twenty one years of age.
Yes, over 30 years. During this time, I have been involved in a variety
of businesses, which I must admit have been good to me. Providing
me with what most people regard as the good things in life,
MONEY - A NICE HOME - CARS - HOLIDAYS.
Ive
experienced good times and bad times ( havent we all?) Ive
lived through boom and recession, and I know that our government wont

many different aspects. From operating a one man business to running
an International Company. Ive bought second hand bangers, Ive
bought fleets of new vehicles. Ive rented, leased, and purchased
properties.
Ive caught planes like other people catch buses. Traveled thousands
of miles a week on business. Worked eighteen hours a day, seven days
a week, month in month out. Truth to be known, in the past I worked
all the hours God sent. WHY? That was the price I had to pay for my
success.
Because that
was the way we entrepreneurs were taught. It is the accepted
method of building a successful business.
Let
me tell you here and now THE ACCEPTED WAY IS GARBAGE.
Bit of a provocative
statement to make? Sure, I know it is, but its true. Maybe you
dont believe me? I can accept that. If someone had told me just
five years ago that the majority of the business practices I had employed
for the previous twenty years were rubbish I wouldnt have believed
them either.
But today
I know, without a shadow of doubt that they would have been right.
Today I know its true. Let me explain.
A few years
ago, the business I had operated very successfully for the previous
eight years was like many other businesses in this country being crippled
by a down turn in the economy .
In fact ,
if Im honest with myself, it had been struggling for more than
a year. But I like thousands of other entrepreneurial optimists crossed
my fingers and kept believing our leaders, when they told me that
the green shoots of recovery were just around the corner.
I like many
others continued to employ people, pay their salaries, tax and national
insurance , long after they had ceased to provide an income for the
company.
In business waiting is more dangerous thantaking
action.
After all,
when the turn around came, and it was just around the corner
we would need their expertise, their talents, and on top of this I
felt obligated to these people. I knew, them personally, their families,
their situation. I also knew they needed their jobs.
So I decided
to wait for the turn around. Believe me that was an expensive mistake.
The green shoots I was waiting for withered and there
came a time when reality had to be faced. We had to restructure our
business. That, by the way, is business speak for
WE HAD TO SACK PEOPLE
At the time
I thought it was terrible. Today I can honestly say, that being forced
to take this step was one of the best things that has ever happened
to me.
For the first
time in years I actually stopped working, long enough to take a good
hard look at what I was doing, and to take the time to make a decision
of what I REALLY WANTED TO DO.

isnt it, even I have difficulty believing it.
Sadly,
it's TRUE.
But because
my existing business was failing, I was given an opportunity to change.
An opportunity to look deeply at the type of life I was leading, the
type of business I was involved in.
Once I realised
the implications of this opportunity I grabbed it with both hands.
Having previously
listed all the things that were wrong with my business life, it was
comparatively easy to make a list of the way I would like to live
and the way I would like to do business. (You may have noticed I make
lots of lists)
Many of the
items on my new list were simply a reversal of what I had been doing
for years and years.

More Constant Traveling
No

I needed to

I wanted a business where the majority of the profit ended up
in my bank account . Not someone elses.
B)
A business with low overheads, and if possible no stock
holding.
C)
A business providing a service or product that boomed
in a recession .
D)
A business that could be operated in a defined area and didnt
require vast amounts of traveling. (I only ever want to enter an airport again to go on holiday)
E)
A business that I could place on hold, at will, allowing
me to take a holiday, or a few days off whenever I wanted. (In the
past few weeks Ive been to Venice, and France, and the business
hasnt suffered one bit)
F)
A business that didnt need to employ any full time staff,
didnt provide any goods on credit, and most importantly
a business that would provide me with an excellent standard of
living.
I wanted
a business that I controlled!
NOT
a business that controlled me!
BIT OF A TALL ORDER WASNT
IT?
I suppose
it was, but as well as being inquisitive, Im also a bit of a
stubborn b****** I spent over a year looking for such a business.
I examined hundreds of products and services, I read reams of business
opportunity literature, most of which bordered on fantasy, before
